Blakeley (or 'Blake') is an unusual case. His parents are not
known. His mother abandonned him in a toy store, sitting in a display carseat. Only
6 months at the time, the only identification was the tattered pajamas he was wearing,
stitched with what was taken to be his first name... "BLAKELEY"
In and of itself, his abandonnment and subsequent placement with the orphanage is
not in any way unusual. What is unusual is that Blakeley has no memory of his mother
or father, and no possessions of that life. Blakeley has been raised in orphanages
and foster care.. rarely lasting long in foster-care placements.. it seems the smaller
the family, the shorter the stay.
In spite of his apparent need for the large populations of orphanages, Blakeley is
inordinately shy. Prone to hiding in small confined spaces, particularly dark ones.
Blakeley also seems to prefer to stay in his pajamas or long underwear. Repeated
attempts to talk him out of this have only resulted in behavioural problems, and
it is felt that it is probably best just to leave him in them.
Blakeley gets along poorly with other boys, and tends towards the company of the
girls, or when possible, the adult women. Blakeley is terrified of most adult men.
When in the company of the other boys, he seems to become the target of bullying
behaviours in the other boys, almost as if he somehow naturally triggers this behaviour
in other boys. Blakeley seems to have bonded fairly strongly with one of the night
janitors at one facility he stayed in, and receives from him a present on birthdays
and christmas, as well as occassional letters and postcards.
Favourites: Blake's favourite colour is black, and he refuses to wear
anything red.. (and often refuses to eat anything red either. Be warned!) Blake's
favourite foods are: Macaroni and Cheese, Fish Sticks, French Fries or Tater Tots,
Carrots with Mustard(!), Chocolate Milk, and Balogna. Blake despises Peanut Butter,
Cherries, and Triscuts. Blake is a big fan of Japanese cartoons, the obscure "Captain
Harlock" in particular. (oft supplied by the janitor friend.)
Food Allergies or Sensitivities: Milk in large quantities (even a few
minutes out of the refrigerator will make him nauseas), Walnuts (or really any nuts
at all), Coconut, Tomatos (Ketchup is fine, just raw Tomatos), Gummi-anything will
make him throw up. (long story about how we found this out!)
Health concerns: Blake is a rambunctious boy, prone to hurting himself
accidentally (in addition to the fights with other boys). His wounds scab over fine
and usually don't scar badly, but he does have some allergies which are of note.
Antibiotic Ointments give him a terrible swelling reaction. Blake has athsma, and
must use an inhaler (which he is prone to 'forgetting'.)
Mental/Emotional Health Concerns: Blakeley bonds well with women and
girls of all ages. His interests seem to reach far into the feminine. This may or
may not change as he grows older, but I felt it of note to mention here. Dress-up
and Pretend games find him in a feminine role 90% of the time, and he can grow very
despondent when excluded by the girls "because he's a boy". Blake has at
times asserted that when he grows up he's going to grow breasts. Blake also refuses
to be publically naked or topless. Blake was very distressed to discover a difference
in male and female genitalia, and insists that his will change. Oddly enough though,
he is still very much a boy in many many respects. I don't know what more to say
about this one, but it bears further study.
Blakeley is prone to rage fits. Indiscriminitly breaking things and throwing things
when aggitated beyond a certain point. We have not yet found a way to control this
anger, attempting to intervene (particularly by restraining him) seems to only aggravate
the fit. We have, however, found a way to deal with it. Taking into consideration
his like for small enclosed spaces, we have made certain to provide him with such
a place at all times, should he need to.. "take a vacation." While at first
this may seem abhorrent to close a small boy in a chest, wardrobe, closet, or footwell
of a car under some coats, understand that this was the solution that Blake himself
suggested. He seems to genuinely enjoy such environments.
And makes a few fairly witty Vampire references, considering his age.
Language: Blakeley occassionally will swear, using words picked up
from some of the other children. His application of the swearing is unique and often
very creative. Blake is fond of accents and will take on an english accent on a whim
and refuse to drop it for hours or even days sometimes. Again, there appears to be
no workable method to dissuade him, so we just try to have fun with it... offering
him "a spot of tea" at snack time.
Learning: Blake is intelligent, often posing questions to the facilitators
to which we have to look up answers. He is not yet ready for school due to his behavioural
problems with boys, but he is already very aware of history. Blake is very distressed
at his inability to learn left and right, and he still cannot tie his shoes. He is
however, a whiz at spelling, and knows 2x and 5x progression patterns (2,4,6,8,10..
5,10,15,20..)
Church: Blake refuses church, prayer, and sunday school. He becomes
highly disruptive, and tends to ask uncomfortable questions. "If God is so big,
what does he eat?" and "Who was God's Mommy and Daddy then??" I feel
it is safe to say that Religion and Blake are going to have a love-hate relationship
for decades to come.
Blakeley is going to be difficult to place. He's reaching that odd age where Orphan
syndrome kicks in, and he's already begun asserting that he has no parents. Additionally,
he refuses any names other than first names for everyone, facilitators, inspectors,
social workers, foster parents, even the police when he's had contact with them.
This may have something to do with his not having a last name of his own. He will
not use any "Mom" or "Dad" like names for foster parents, often
to their offense.
The first best bet is the Janitor, of course, but he's divorced and paying alimony
to his ex-wfe, and is prone to drink. (only being caught doing so once on the grounds).
He and Blake have a bond.. and I am afraid he would lose even that bond if placed
permanently with someone else.
This concludes my report. Blakeley is a good boy. He's 5.
